Question
Do you think it is really safe for me to be on the pill?
Answer from Rebecca
The question of “safety” is a bit sketchy. The list of side effects known to be related to the birth control pill is a long one. And the list of side effects NOT known to be related to the birth control pill concerns me, too! Personally, I worry very much about what we do not know now about the impact of synthetic hormones like those found in the birth control pill, hormone replacement therapy, and other forms of birth control like the new plastic IUDs which slowly release synthetic hormones, or the birth control “shot” or “patch.” I am very concerned that in the years to come, we will discover that we have done ourselves tremendous harm by utilizing these chemicals and that by that time, it will be too late for our generation and for our daughters to come. From a professional standpoint, I like to work with my clients to familiarize them with their bodies and their own natural rhythms. Knowing your body, when you ovulate, and understanding ways of protecting yourself from pregnancy without the use of synthetic hormones is, I think, the “safest” approach to birth control.
